Tell our audience about you
My name is Collin Powell, and I'm a 13-year-old honor student-athlete. My core honors classes are AP Science, Math, and English. This year, I was the starting point guard for Hurst Middle School, played the saxophone in the band, and participated in high jump and the 800-meter run in track. All while maintaining good grades and playing on the 7th and 8th grade AAU teams. Because of my work on and off the court, I will be inducted into the National Junior Honor Society.
What sport do you play, and how did you start getting into it?
I currently play basketball. I started playing all sports at 4 years old and quickly developed a passion for basketball. My parents would always take me to the gym at a young age and began coaching me from the moment I was able to pick up a ball.
What do you love most about being an athlete?
I love developing my skills and getting better while spending time with my teammates.
Can you describe what a typical practice looks like for you?
We start with stretching, then a few warm-up drills. After that, we focus on defense and offensive plays and finish up with running.

What’s your favorite memory from a game or competition?
My favorite memory from a game is when I helped my team win a game against a difficult opponent by stepping up and being a leader. I played strong defense and scored over 20 points.
How do you set goals for yourself in your sport?
When there’s something I need to improve, I work hard practicing it until I get it right. No days off!
What’s a challenge you’ve faced while playing, and how did you deal with it?
I played in a school game with a hurt knee and pushed myself the entire game without a break so that I could be there for my team.
Can you tell me about a time you learned something important after losing a game?
Every time we lose, we review our mistakes and help each other improve. My coaches always remind me that there will be another game, so learn from your mistakes and move on.
How do you stay focused when you’re competing?
I zone out and concentrate on the goal of winning and competing hard.
What’s the best advice a coach has given you?
"I believe in you. Trust yourself and your game: You got this, C! There's always the next play."
Who is your biggest supporter?
My parents.
How do you practice on your own to get better?
I work out in the gym and at home on my basketball goal. I practice 5-6 days a week and shoot at least 50 shots a day.
Why is teamwork important in your sport, and how do you help your teammates?
It takes everyone to win a game. I try to build them up when they make a mistake and celebrate their successes.
How do you feel when you’re under pressure during a big game?
I play a lot of basketball, so I'm used to the pressure. I stay calm and look for the best option to shoot, drive, or pass.
What keeps you motivated to practice and improve?
My big goal is to play basketball at the highest level.
How do you celebrate when you achieve something, like winning a game?
I eat! 🍕
What advice would you give to younger kids who want to start playing sports?
Practice every day and always believe in yourself.
How do you balance your sports with school and hanging out with friends?
I make sure to finish my homework before practice and sometimes do it while traveling from practice.
Who do you talk to for support when things get tough in your sport?
My parents and friends.
What do you hope to achieve in your sport in the future?
I hope to play in the NBA and be one of the best players to ever play the game.
How do you take care of your body and avoid getting hurt while training?
I rest my body when I’m not playing and make sure to hydrate and get enough protein.
What message would you like to share with other young athletes who dream big?
Don't stop dreaming and work hard.
